Survival of Animals

1. All living things will die after some time.
2. Thus, every living thing needs to reproduce for the survival of their species.
3. There are two ways animals can ensure their species continue to exist. they can either lay eggs or give birth to the young.

How Animals Ensure the Survival of Their Species

1. Every animal has its own way of protecting its eggs or young.
2. Animals which lay their eggs on land normally produce eggs which have hard shells to protect the eggs from enemies.
3. Animals which lay eggs in water usually produce a large number of eggs at one time.
4. This is to ensure that some of the young will remain even though some of the eggs are eaten by enemies.

How Animals Protect Their Eggs

The ways by which animals take care of their eggs.

• Making their nests on top of trees.
• Hatching or wrapping their bodies around their eggs.
• Laying eggs in holes.
• Laying eggs on the lower parts of leaves.
• laying eggs which are contained in egg cases and the eggs are laid in safe places.
• Hiding their eggs.
• Laying a large number of slimy eggs.
• Carrying eggs on the lower parts of their bodies.

How Animals Protect Their Young

• In order to ensure their survival, animals take care of their young.
• Birds feed their young until they can fly to find food for themselves.

• Crocodiles always carry their newborn in their mouths to safer places.

• Some fish will keep their young in their mouths when the young are in danger.

• Scorpions always carry their young on their backs in order to protect their young from enemies.

• Many female animals such as cows, goats, cats, dogs, rabbits and rats produce milk to feed their young.

• The females always take care of their young until the young are able to take care of themselves.
